Welcome to the Espace Alu, a
museum dedicated to the era of aluminium in the Alps, situated in Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, in the heart of the Maurienne valley, where aluminium was first industrialized at the end of the 19th century! This fascinating visit will teach you all there is to know about aluminium
through scale models, experiences, games, films and collector’s items!
Along the museum’s 600m² of exhibits, you can see:
- On the ground floor: the history of the Maurienne and why the aluminium factories were built in this valley
- On the first floor: the discovery of aluminium and how it is manufactured, from the ore to the finished article
- On the second floor: the evolution of work conditions in the factories and the implications of aluminium on the environment and health.
When you finish your visit, come and enjoy having a look around the
museum shop where you will find original and unusual aluminium objects as well as books.
A guided tour of the museum is available in English.
